Traditional Nepali measurement

Mana–Pathi & Nepali Weight Converter

Convert मुठ्ठी, माना, पाथी and मुरी into litres, or Lal, Tola, Pau and Dharni into grams, kilograms and quintals—with the ambiguity of modern Pau handled openly.

Mana, Pathi and Muri measure volume, not weight. One Pathi of rice and one Pathi of maize occupy the same volume but need not weigh the same.

Mana, Pathi and Muri in Nepal

Mana (माना), Pathi (पाथी) and Muri (मुरी) are traditional capacity measures closely associated with grain, seed, pulses and household trade. The standard relationship used here is 10 Mutthi = 1 Mana, 8 Mana = 1 Pathi and 20 Pathi = 1 Muri. With one Pathi taken as 4.54596 litres, one Muri equals 90.9192 litres.

1 Pathi8 Mana · 80 Mutthi · 4.54596 L
1 Muri20 Pathi · 160 Mana · 90.9192 L

Why one Pathi is not a fixed number of kilograms

Pathi measures the space occupied; kilogram measures mass. Grain variety, moisture, packing and whether the measure is heaped or level all affect weight. A Pathi of paddy, polished rice, maize or lentils therefore cannot share one trustworthy kg conversion. This tool keeps volume and weight separate instead of inventing a universal answer.

Nepali weight units and the Pau ambiguity

Tola remains common in Nepal’s gold and silver market. The converter uses 1 Tola = 11.6638038 g and the jewellery convention 100 Lal = 1 Tola. The traditional Dharni is approximately 2.3325 kg and was divided into 12 Pau.

Modern speech complicates Pau: some sellers mean the old 194.375 g unit, others mean a quarter kilogram (250 g), and some use 200 g. The calculator never chooses silently—you select the applicable standard.

Historical and local variation

Traditional vessels and customary weights were not always identical across every period and region. Use these results for conversion and comparison, but use calibrated metric equipment for legal trade, shipping or purchases where exact weight matters. Always confirm what a seller means by Pau and whether a grain measure is level or heaped.
