Share investing in Nepal

Nepal has a large and fast-growing base of retail investors trading on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) through licensed brokers and the TMS online platform, with shares held in demat accounts via CDSC. Every trade carries a broker commission, a SEBON regulatory fee and a DP charge, and selling at a profit attracts Capital Gains Tax, all deducted at source by the broker or DP. Because these costs reduce returns — especially on small trades where the Rs 10 minimum commission applies — investors work out their true cost, break-even price and net profit before trading. IPOs, right shares and bonus shares are also extremely popular, which makes accurate buy and sell calculations a daily habit for many Nepalis.

Frequently asked questions

What charges apply when buying and selling shares in Nepal?

Every trade has a broker commission (0.24%–0.36% of the amount, minimum Rs 10), a SEBON regulatory fee of 0.015%, and a DP charge of Rs 25 per company per transaction. When you sell at a profit, Capital Gains Tax (CGT) also applies.

How much is Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on shares in Nepal?

For individuals, CGT is 5% if the shares were held for more than 365 days, and 7.5% if held for 365 days or less. For institutions it is 10%. CGT is charged only on the profit (gain), when you sell.

What is the break-even price?

It is the minimum price you need to sell at to recover everything you paid — your buy price plus all the buy and sell charges. Selling above the break-even price means a profit; below it means a loss.

How is broker commission calculated?

It is a slab on the transaction amount: 0.36% up to Rs 50,000, 0.33% up to Rs 5 lakh, 0.31% up to Rs 20 lakh, 0.27% up to Rs 1 crore, and 0.24% above that — with a minimum of Rs 10 per transaction.

What is the average (WACC) buy price?

If you bought the same stock at different prices, your weighted-average cost is the total money spent divided by the total shares. Use the 'Avg price' tab to calculate it.
